What to Do in the First 24 Hours of Water Damage

A step-by-step checklist for the critical first day after water damage: how to stay safe, limit the damage, and protect your insurance claim.

The first 24 hours after water damage decide how much you lose. Water spreads into drywall, subfloor, and framing within minutes, and mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours. Acting fast and correctly protects both your property and your insurance claim.

1. Stay safe first

  • Shut off the power to affected areas at the breaker if you can reach it safely. Never enter standing water near outlets or appliances.
  • Avoid contaminated water. If the water came from a sewer backup, storm, or toilet overflow, treat it as a biohazard and keep people and pets away.
  • Watch for sagging ceilings, which can collapse under the weight of trapped water.

2. Stop the source

If the water is coming from a burst pipe or appliance, shut off your main water valve. If it is from the roof or a storm, place buckets and move valuables out of the path.

3. Document everything for your claim

Before you move or clean anything, photograph and video the damage from multiple angles. Keep damaged belongings until your adjuster has reviewed them. This documentation is the backbone of a smooth insurance claim.

4. Call a certified restoration company

A professional crew can extract standing water, find moisture hidden inside walls with thermal imaging, and begin drying to a measurable standard. The sooner drying starts, the less material has to be removed and replaced.

5. Begin mitigation while you wait

If it is safe, mop up what you can, blot carpet, and open windows to improve airflow. Do not use a household vacuum on water, and do not wait until morning. Most insurance policies require you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage.

The bottom line

Speed is everything. A fast, documented response in the first day is the single biggest factor in limiting both the damage and the cost. When in doubt, call a 24/7 restoration line and let trained crews take it from there.
